Some journeys stay with us because they take us somewhere unfamiliar—and help us see the world differently. You might picture elephants crossing a river at sunset, the quiet immensity of a polar landscape, or a day spent among ancient sites, mountain villages, and lively markets.

“Adventure travel” can mean all of these things. It does not have to mean the most strenuous itinerary or the most remote place on the map. The right adventure is the one that fits what you want to feel, how you like to spend your days, and what level of comfort helps you enjoy the experience.

If you are weighing a safari, a polar expedition, or a cultural journey through Peru, start with the experience you hope to bring home. Then consider the pace, activity, and conditions that will make it rewarding for you.

My biggest takeaway from my recent trip to Paris was the importance of not scheduling every hour.

It can be tempting to fill every day, especially when there is so much to see. Paris offers an almost endless list of museums, monuments, neighborhoods, restaurants and experiences. Yet some of our favorite moments happened over an unhurried meal, while browsing a neighborhood shop or simply walking without an agenda.

A thoughtfully planned itinerary should include the places you do not want to miss while still leaving space for discoveries you could never have planned. Finding that balance between seeing and simply being is one of travel’s greatest luxuries.

If you’re dreaming of vineyard-covered hillsides, historic villages, beautiful gardens, regional cuisine, and leisurely afternoons spent sampling Portuguese wine, a Douro River cruise may be calling your name.

After recently sailing Viking’s Portugal’s River of Gold, I discovered that cruising the Douro is quite different from sailing Europe’s larger rivers—and that is part of its charm.

The Douro offers a slower, more intimate journey through one of Portugal’s most beautiful regions. Before you book, however, there are a few things worth knowing.

Sometimes the destinations you know the least about before you arrive are the ones you can’t stop talking about afterward.

That was Portugal for me. I arrived curious, but without many expectations — and perhaps that’s exactly why it left such a lasting impression.
