One of the biggest misconceptions about luxury travel is that it’s all about choosing the right destination.
In reality, the destination is only one piece of the puzzle.
After working with travelers planning everything from luxury safaris and river cruises to custom European itineraries and milestone celebrations, I’ve noticed a common pattern: many people begin by asking, “Where should we go?”
I believe there’s a better place to start.
We’ve all been there.
The vacation dates are finally on the calendar. You’re excited to start planning. Then, before long, you’ve spent hours scrolling through hotel reviews, watching destination videos, comparing itineraries, and reading endless “must-see” lists—only to feel more overwhelmed than when you started.
The problem isn’t a lack of information.
It’s that most travelers choose a destination before they’ve taken the time to think about what they truly want from the journey.
That approach may work for a quick getaway. But when you’re investing significant time and money in a luxury vacation, it pays to begin somewhere else.
Begin with yourself.
The most memorable journeys aren’t defined by five-star hotels or famous landmarks. They’re shaped by how the experience reflects your interests, your travel style, and the memories you hope to create.
Before you search for a single flight or compare another luxury resort, pause and ask yourself these questions:
Think beyond the hotel room.
Years from now, you’ll probably remember the sunrise safari where elephants quietly crossed your path, lunch with a winemaker overlooking the vineyards, a cooking class in a small Italian village, or the local guide whose stories changed the way you saw a destination.

Perhaps it’s seeing mountain gorillas in Uganda, sailing through Norway’s fjords, wandering the gardens of England, or simply lingering over an extraordinary meal with the people you love.
Those are the moments that transform a vacation into lifelong memories.
Luxury means something different to every traveler.
For some, it’s a beautiful suite with an ocean view. For others, it’s private guides, seamless airport transfers, insider access, or knowing every detail has been thoughtfully arranged before they leave home.
Maybe it’s avoiding the crowds by traveling in shoulder season. Maybe it’s unpacking just once on a river cruise. Or maybe it’s simply having someone else handle the logistics so you can be fully present and enjoy the journey.
Understanding what removes stress from your travels is just as important as knowing what brings you joy.
This may be the most important question of all.
What inspired this journey? What do you hope to achieve from it? And how do you want to feel when you return home?
Perhaps you’re celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. Maybe you’ve reached retirement and finally have the freedom to explore the world. Perhaps you’ve spent years caring for others and are longing to reconnect with yourself. Or maybe you simply need time to slow down, recharge, and experience something extraordinary.
Your answer should shape every decision that follows.
If your goal is restoration, a wellness retreat or luxury beachfront resort may be exactly what you need. If you’re craving adventure, perhaps it’s an African safari or trekking to see mountain gorillas. If connection is your priority, a thoughtfully curated river cruise, private villa, or multi-generational family journey may create the memories you’ll treasure most.
Luxury travel isn’t simply about where you go.
It’s about returning home feeling exactly the way you hoped you would—rested, inspired, reconnected, accomplished, or simply grateful for the experience.

These questions aren’t difficult—but they’re often the ones we skip because it’s much more exciting to browse beautiful hotels, compare destinations, and dream about where to go next.
The travelers I work with are busy professionals, retirees, and couples who value their time as much as their travel experiences. They don’t want to spend countless hours sorting through endless reviews or wondering if they’re making the right decisions.
Taking the time to answer these questions first brings clarity to the planning process. It cuts through the noise, helps you invest in the experiences that matter most, and ensures the vacation you choose is the one you truly need.
That’s why my work begins with a conversation—not a destination.
Before I recommend a hotel, itinerary, or cruise, I want to understand what you’re celebrating, what inspires you, how you like to travel, and what you hope this journey will mean to you.
Only then do we design an experience that’s thoughtfully tailored and beautifully executed from start to finish.
Because the most extraordinary vacations don’t happen by accident.
They begin with intention.
I’d love to hear from you: Which of these questions resonated with you most? Or is there another question you always ask yourself before planning a meaningful journey?
